William Barton

Private (later Corporal) 810712 · D Company, 28th (Māori) Battalion · Te Kūiti
Early life
William Barton was a Ngāti Maniapoto man from Te Kūiti. When he enlisted he was married and working as a storeman, and his wife, Mrs V. R. Barton, lived in William Street, Te Kūiti. His date of birth and parents are still to be found.
War
William sailed with D Company in 1945, having been in camp at the military depot at Pukekohe. His draft left late in the war, and it may have reached Italy after the fighting ended in May 1945. He is named on the Ngāti Maniapoto Second World War memorial flagpole at Te Tokanganui-a-Noho, Te Kūiti, as Corporal W. Barton. His life after the war is still a gap.
