Arthur Anderson

Portrait of Arthur Anderson
Artist’s impression based on a 1941 group photograph taken at Katerini, Greece.

Corporal 8830 · D Company, 28th (Māori) Battalion · Second Echelon, 1940

Arthur is a different man from Sergeant Arthur Tukiri Anderson (67509) of Taumarunui, who also served in D Company.

Early life

Arthur Anderson (Aterea Anihana) was a Ngāti Maniapoto man from Te Aharoa, near Te Kūiti. His father, Mr W. Anderson, was his next of kin, and when he enlisted he was single and working as a labourer. Morris Anderson of Te Kūiti, who also served in D Company, was probably his brother.

War

Arthur sailed with the Second Echelon in 1940, in Headquarters Company, and later served in D Company. In April 1941 he was in Greece with Battalion Headquarters, where he was photographed at Katerini with Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Ngarimu and Charles Bennett.

Remembered

Arthur is named on the Ngāti Maniapoto Second World War memorial at Te Tokanganui-a-Noho, Te Kūiti. His life after the war is still being pieced together.
