Henery Berghan

Private 5710 · D Company, 28th (Māori) Battalion · Wounded, 1941
Early life
Henery Berghan, also known as Henry and Jack, was born in about 1903. His mother, Mrs M. Berghan, lived at Kaihu, in Northland, and later at Te Aroha. Before the war he was a truck driver at Tuai, in the Waikaremoana district, and he was single. At about 36 he was one of the older men in the battalion.
War
Henery sailed with the Second Echelon in 1940 in Headquarters Company and later served in D Company. He was wounded, and his name appeared in the casualty lists in August 1941, most likely for the fighting on Crete. By mid-1943 he had been invalided home. Another Berghan, Joseph, was wounded and taken prisoner, and the prisoner-of-war note on Henery’s Online Cenotaph record probably belongs to him. Henery died on 3 February 1956, aged 52, and is buried in the soldiers’ section of Hamilton East Cemetery.
